GENERAL MEDICINE

The study of General Medicine is the common foundation and prerequisite for all medical specialties and disciplines. Anyone who wants to become a doctor must study this programme.

The study of medicine is the longest ever full-time master's programme. It must equip you with all the knowledge and skills you need to become a doctor, to work under professional supervision in hospitals and outpatient facilities, and to begin further specialised training.

The curriculum first includes extensive theoretical courses that will enable you to understand the functioning and structure of the body, as well as the mechanisms that we can potentially influence through treatment. These include, for example, Anatomy, Biochemistry or Physiology.

You will then use the knowledge you have gained in pre-clinical subjects such as Pathology, Microbiology or Pharmacology, which will give you an insight into the nature of disease and the changes in the structure of tissues, organs and the whole body during pathological conditions, as well as an understanding of our ability to intervene therapeutically during disease. Only with this knowledge will you understand the principles of diagnosis and treatment of diseases in patients. You will acquire the fundamentals necessary for medical reasoning in clinical subjects such as Surgery, Internal Medicine or Differential Diagnosis.

The specific needs of different age groups are also taken into account in your studies. During your studies you will also learn the basics of Paediatrics, Gynaecology and Obstetrics or Geriatrics. You will also gain knowledge in influencing population health and health care organization.

The study of medicine is very diverse. It includes classical lectures, laboratory exercises, seminars, dissections, as well as internships in medical institutions or simulation training. As a medical student, you will also have the opportunity to participate in faculty research activities. Studying General Medicine is very demanding, taking 6 years (approximately 5500 hours of teaching). You must expect to spend a lot of time in school and self-study. The willingness to devote yourself fully to your studies is a prerequisite for success. The reward for your efforts is a high quality education that enables you to pursue an interesting, fulfilling and prestigious career with a great tradition and high employability.

DENTISTRY

Do you want to become a dentist? You can study the Dentistry programme at Masaryk University Faculty of Medicine. Studying this programme is the only way to become a dentist.

You will be a specialist who deals with the prevention and treatment of oral diseases such as tooth decay, diseases of the hanging apparatus of the teeth (periodontium) or the replacement of lost teeth in both children and adult patients. The study is also the basis for further possible specialisation - in orthodontics (a field that deals with straightening teeth) and maxillofacial surgery (a field that deals, often in collaboration with doctors of other specialities - such as ENT or ophthalmology, with injuries to the orofacial region and treats tumours in this area).

Dentistry is what is known as a long master's programme, lasting 5 years. During your studies, you will be equipped with all the necessary knowledge about the problems of oral diseases, as well as their relationship to the overall health of the patient. After successful completion of the studies, you will be able to immediately start your career as a dentist and work without professional supervision, most often in outpatient facilities (private practices).

The advantage of studying Dentistry is the almost immediate connection of the acquired theoretical knowledge with its practical application. As early as the first semester, students learn the basics of caries treatment in simulated training, and from the second year onwards they treat real patients in practical training. Even though the study is quite demanding and requires mastering a large amount of both theoretical and practical knowledge, the reward for you will be a very high quality education enabling you to obtain a prestigious, interesting and lucrative profession with a high employment market.
